A TED Talk You Don’t Want to Miss!

Hi all,

I was watching Link TV last night (a fairly leftist, world-centric network that has a bit of a socialist bent to it) because a TED talk was on.  A guy named Clay Shirky

came on and started talking about how social media and social networks have changed a media landscape that had largely been unchanged since the 40s and 50s.  In an age of technical and industrial innovation, media and communications methods had changed very little between 1940 and 2000.  That’s a pretty long innovation drought that was only relieved by the internet, user communities, and user-generated content.

I sat watching the entire 15 minute speech with my mouth wide open.  This guy was really speaking my language.

In the talk, he covers the following:

  • Major revolutions in use of media through human history and the handful of inventions that caused those revolutions
  • How amateur generated content flipped traditional media communications on its head and made news consumption and reporting more accessible
  • How social media became the newest revolution in the use of media through inter-connected, two way communication

He also sprinkles in a little bit of humor here and there during his examples.

This guy is talking about stuff that is near and dear to me, and a topic that I’ve been personally and professionally studying for about 10 years.  Three or four times during his presentation, I found myself shouting out the answers to his musings, which annoyed the hell out of my wife.  After the talk was over, I just knew I had to share it with everyone.  It was exciting to me because it affirmed a lot of the stuff I have learned over the last 10 years of my career, and it’s even more exciting because it explains the topic so clearly, in such a short period of time.

If you are a marketing person, and have NO idea why so many people make such a big deal about social media marketing, this video is a must see opportunity.  If you’re social media curious but don’t have a ton of knowledge, this will give you a good base.  If you’re a social media veteran, you will be extremely entertained by this video.  In other words, required watching for everyone!

Don’t take my word for it.  Watch it for yourself and let me know what you think.

Till next time,
